I'm thinking that the first MacBook with a ARM processor will be for education to compete with Chromebooks.

They dont need to switch completely, they only need to make MacOS AMD-Compatible (as Windows is); and make different hardware version (again, like Surface Pro, that has both intel and AMD versions). If its an AMD-semi-custom build, could be use for high performance.

This would be actually a good decision. Just think about apple unfortunate timing of using xeons instead of threadripper in the Mac pro, just a terrible mistake

The change from Motorola to Intel was enough to make us realize that the CPU matters not.

While switching to AMD makes sense, you wonder if Apple is seriously looking at going with a multicore version of the A14 SoC as the starting point for future Mac models.

Just bought an EGPU for my 2019 Mac Pro. I’ll be in the corner crying about my purchasing decisions now.
Delain124 4 aylar önce
Uh? They are talking about AMD CPU. So what does the EGPU have to do with the CPU?
TruthAndMoreTruth 4 aylar önce
I though Apple was going to make their own chips? Don't they use their own chip in the Mac Book?
Steve Steele
Steve Steele 4 aylar önce
I don’t see it. Apple just spent a lot of time and effort rebooting the Mac Pro and if they were planning a move to AMD, it would have made a lot of sense to start with the EPYC CPU, instead of having to then clumsily switch during a refresh cycle later on. Btw, the iMac Pro isn’t that old (comes with a (Xeon), and the Mac Mini was also semi-rebooted . The problem is that with pro apps, there’s a lot more CPU optimization going on, notably in the form of AVX-512 instruction set support which AMD doesn’t support. And yes, I have several “pro” apps and plugins that are highly optimized for AVX-512. So, that rules out the workstation class Macs. What about the MacBooks and iMacs then? Although I have no doubt that Apple has internal Macs running on AMD.CPUs right now, it’s not very Apple-like to fragment hardware, especially the CPU. Apple doesn’t want m customers coming up with questions like, “what brand CPU does this Mac come with? Will this AMD Mac support such and such feature that my Intel Mac supports?” I just think Apple would want to make sure that customers don’t care which x86 CPU is in their Mac, because as of now Apple can’t just stop using Intel. They would have to use both AMD and Intel. Not sure Apple would do that, (even if it’s been the norm in the PC world forever). However, this eSports thing is very intriguing. Apple could do very well for itself in the gaming market IF they really dedicated themselves to it. They have all the talent in house to succeed in this area. And now that gaming is becoming big business and not just a hobbyists sport, I could see Apple forming a gaming division, (like the Pro division that did the Mac Pro), to make a specialty gaming workstation, built from the ground up with gaming in mind. But unlike the audio and video industry, Apple doesn’t own the gaming industry. There would have to be a LOT of money in it for Apple to really do it right. For Apple to build an AMD Mac, much like the Mac Pro, it would have to scream “this Mac is for gamers and gaming applications and nobody else.” Gamers themselves doesn’t like to spend a lot of money. There has to be industry behind it. Then, maybe in a few years when the A series SoC has moved forward a few more generations, and Apple has made strides in the gaming community, maybe then Apple will become less Intel dependent. I guess my first question would be, which Mac gets the AMD CPU first and why? I could give reasons why no current Mac would be a good candidate and it has to do with the industries that buy the Macs they buy, and what advantages those Macs have in that industry (as far as the CPU goes). I’m sure it’s obvious.
Steve Steele

ADMIRAL. BACON Apple doesn’t have a gaming PC. And if and when they do, it will have to be competitive which means it will have to be different in design than anything else they currently offer. They have the talent and resources to enter that market. That was my point.

It already works with amd chips. I've got my ryzen 1700 working in my hackintosh without any problems except for power management. Those references are probably for the GPUs in the cpus. Both amd and Intel use are using x86 so the optimization from their part shouldn't be that hard except for the power management and converting to amds virtualization instead of haxm / vt-x

@opendebate haha $30k server CPU
mabbook 4 aylar önce
@opendebate The 56 core CPU you are talking about was made by Intel taking one of their two-socket server setups and putting it on a single package so it has multiple issues. One is that it uses over 400 watts of power while barely matching AMD's 280 watt CPU. Second, since it is literally two CPUs on one package it is much too big to realistically fit into a desktop computer and to cool it since it uses over 400 watts. The third is cost, The 56 core from intel has no retail pricing but it costs over 30k from intel that would be fine except that AMD's CPU is only 4k while performing better and using less power and space.

Nearly all professional applications are still written for x86. To get them to work on ARM requires emulation, so they run terribly.

There are something like 1500 new ryzen 4000 notebooks coming out soon. OEMs are switching fast. WHY? Ryzen is cooler and as fast as intel in gaming and beat them in multicore processes. ON the Build Your own PC market Ryzen is out selling intel with the mainstream market still thinking intel is the best. It will be a while before most "normal" people catch up.

@Robert Hardy Well the ARM instruction set is indeed more power efficient than x86. It's just not as full featured.
Kristoffer Johnsen
Kristoffer Johnsen 4 aylar önce
Not gonna happen with their MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro. They need more power than the A series chips can deliver for those devices. AMD's Zen 2 CPUs are more powerful and power efficient than Intel's. Apple might go ARM for the regular MacBooks and MacBook Air, but the A series chips just aren't NEARLY powerful enough to compare with Zen 2 for productivity.
Robert Hardy
Robert Hardy 4 aylar önce
Why do you assume Apple could make chips with better power management?

or Apple could use the iphone A14 chip and the Intel chip in the mac and use them for many tasks just like the T2 chip already is ARM and acts like a second CPU

Zen 3 7nm+ Ryzen 5000 apus will be mostlikely as fast or faster than rysen 3800x desktop cpu with an 5000 apu using graphics faster than Radeon xt560 (maybe even beat the radeon xt 570 desktop model) all at 10 to 25 watt. I suspect this will launch in fall the pro amd apu (apu=cpu with intigrated gpu) There are rumors this apu might support ray tracing Apu breakk down. 7nm+ cpu with 8 core 16 thread with intigated navi 2.0 7nm+ gpu with 26 cuda cores in a tdp package of 25 watts. Rysen 4800h 8core 16 thread 7nm is equiled with vega intigrated graphics is beating intel desktop chips with 8 core 8 threads by 5 to 10 percent in cpu benchs. And that 4800h's intigrated graphics is significately faster than intels 10 gen intigrated graphics. Back to rysen 5000 it is rumored to be 15 to 25 faster than the 4800h while its graphics will be 50 to 75 percent faster than that 4800h. Intel isnt competing well in the laptop market in 2020 and may not have an answer to zen 3 apus tell 2quarter 2021.
