I fully disagree that the census in 2020 is at all private. It’s mailed out to be Hand Written. It’s mailed back from an address, likely with Fingerprints on it. It’s received by a Human... no, they don’t need to have access to all that metadata. Unless they want to pay me money and sign a contract in person and get it notarized, that data won’t be given.

Really not understanding why privacy would need to be protected in census data. I’m all about privacy and security, but we give up most, if not more, of this information whenever we apply for credit. The companies and credit bureaus also then sell our information. Gov’t agencies (OPM) and credit bureaus (Equifax) have data breeches and lose control of this information. What specific negative ramifications could occur from census data? An attacker learns my age, sex, and marital status? Would make sense ethically if the “illegal alien” question was there but it was removed. Still, awesome mathematical science and I can see the importance of its use in other types of studies.

I worked for the USCensus Bureau in 2005 or so, it was an interesting job, and we all took privacy and confidentiality very seriously. I hope all the men and women working on the 2020 census get to see this video.

I don't see why I would care that someone could reconstruct my idea if he doesn't know how to attribute this reconstructed Data. Sure you might be able know that there exists a 32 year old heterosexual divorced mexican woman with 3 children who loves ice cream but how would you even find that person to harm her?

I still don't get this - unless names are a component of the data released, we have the best privacy possible - "I know I fit a lot of your statistics, but I swear I don't fit your conclusion about me!" I don't understand why jittering is necessary when you can just *say* you jittered but didn't. This may explain why I was an art major though, lol

maybe the Census Bureau should just do what the Constitution REQUIRES them to do : "Count the people" ( this comment seems familiar, did I already make it? )

lol. In germany it is illegal by constitution to collect data like civilians ethnicity another thing USA didnt learn from WW2
Nine Tails
Nine Tails 5 aylar önce
Also the Constitution was made long before WW2, and we used it to our advantage just like Germany. We just got away with our war crimes. It’s the Germans who really didn’t learn post-WW2, they’re all puppets to the very beings they swore to defeat.

I noticed that you modeled gender as "M," "F," and "T." This is a poor model. Transgender people are not a separate gender; many of us are male or female. I think you were thinking about nonbinary people, who are a subset of transgender people. In the situation where you have to use one letter, the proper choice for nonbinary people is "X." This is common on official IDs in the US and other countries. It is inappropriate to lump all transgender people in with nonbinary folks because it takes away our clearly identified binary gender.
Ambrus Sümegi

The notion of "gender" is a non-solution to a non-problem.

What if bad actors combine not-public, but accurate information with the public information available? Like lets say that I target a certain population using illegal methods like a phishing attack or buying credit card information on the dark web, would I with a relatively small amount of super accurate private information be able to prune down the noise in released statistics to have useful peaks fall out? How would you protect against that? is there a minimum amount of randomness to make the amount of private data needed infeasible by 99% of actors?

You say that the 2020 census will protect our privacy with a mathematically rigorous formula, but this implies the president won't just get the raw data and violate everyone's rights anyway.

And then you have credit card companies purposefully not doing any of this so they can sell data that's ostensibly anonymized.

Im thinking about something but at the same time dont want to say.... but.... How can this privacy choice made by one federal dept affect the big data gathering name's (you know who they are) data protection and use choices? Can this affect consumer opinion, or maybe even avocate consumer rights about data collection & use!? (Kind of Rhetorical question, I know, hey, I write a little scifi, dont judge me 2much.) And... are these two concepts even similar enough to bother pointing this out?
DoctorX17 10 aylar önce
So.... if you had the un-jittered census data, you could [assuming it was 100% accurate and complete] tell me the exact age, race, gender, and whatever else they collect for everyone in the country?
RadicalxEdward 10 aylar önce
Most people would take a shiny box in exchange for their privacy. That’s what’s really scary.

In my opinion, the concern with privacy isn't that everyone can know an individual's information; it's that single large groups can know disproportionately large amounts of information about large quantities of people. I believe if one group can access not-necessarily-sensitive data like my age and sex, then everyone should be able to as well.
IɴSɪmpʟeTermsJordaɴ 10 aylar önce
Please don't use the words "sex" and "gender" synonymously. They're not the same thing.
